The Premier Colin Barnett says he is extremely worried about the potential for power shortages in Western Australia in two to three years time.
His comments come a day after Apache Energy announced it would be postponing work on a $900 million gas plant near Karratha, in the Pilbara, due to the economic downturn.
Mr Barnett says the break up of Western Power means there is no longer a strong energy utility in WA.
He says none of the new entities has been able to give any guarantees about the reliability of power supplies in coming years.
"I think we have a risk, a real risk in Western Australia about the reliability and the price of electricity and gas, no doubt about it," he said.
